Why it matters: The $200 transfer tax went to zero in January and a federal court voided the registration requirement in August, so the hard part of buying a suppressor is no longer getting one. It is choosing among several hundred that all look like black tubes, and the buying advice has not caught up to the hardware.
Brass Facts, a preparedness-oriented YouTube channel, published "So you want to buy a suppressor?" on September 18. It is a framework rather than a product review: the host's stated premise is that the obstacle in 2026 is decision paralysis, not availability.
He opens by contrasting the old process — near year-long waits, mailed paperwork, and designs he says made the host rifle worse — with the current one, describing Silencer Shop kiosks in gun stores that handle the application and wait times of under a week. He also points to the prospect of buying a suppressor on a Form 4473 the way a rifle is bought, and notes the implications that would carry for private sales.
The video sets two limits up front. It covers centerfire rifle suppressors only, with handgun cans deferred to a separate treatment on the grounds that the dynamics there are close to inverted. And it defers raw sound-to-shooter measurement to Pew Science, which the host describes as the comprehensive data set covering nearly the whole market. On supersonic rifle platforms, he says, none of the suppressors under discussion are hearing safe in the traditional sense beyond a few rounds. His own weighting goes instead to signature reduction: flash, tone and volume as they obscure a muzzle report from everyone but the shooter.
Low back pressure suppressors versus traditional baffle cans
The taxonomy comes first because, in the host's framing, design predicts most of the rest. Traditional cans are a stack of baffles, with brand differences falling mostly to mounts, size, materials and quality-of-life features rather than technology. He characterizes those as high back pressure and argues that making them tolerable takes more than a buffer and spring change — a gas regulator, an adjustable bolt carrier, or a suppressor-specific gas tube — a large ask for shooters on non-adjustable rifles, larger-caliber platforms, or issued duty guns they cannot modify.
Low back pressure designs, he says, use metal 3D printing to reach geometries a CNC machine cannot cut, slowing gas through high internal surface area and winding travel paths instead of relying on expansion volume. He describes the category as a sliding scale rather than a class, placing HUXWRX at the minimal-back-pressure end and most of the market well to the right of it. The trade at that end, per the video: more sparking, a boomier report, and a notably shorter service life than average, plus a muzzle device he calls loud and a poor choice for anyone taking the suppressor on and off. He adds that those cans are popular in law enforcement and military circles.
Designs nearer the middle give up some of the back pressure reduction for flash, concussion and downrange signature performance, and he says they still typically want a heavier buffer and stouter spring on short-barreled rifles. On piston-driven platforms he reports having to leave the regulator in its unsuppressed setting.
He then argues the traditional can is not finished. Where a rifle can be tuned aggressively or was built around a high back pressure can, he says nothing beats a design such as the Otter Creek Labs Polonium on flash at higher rates of fire, and that traditional cans run less concussive indoors and around cover, shift tone and volume more downrange, heat up more slowly, and hold up better — thicker baffles against printed internals he describes as spindlier.
Suppressor materials: titanium, Inconel and stainless
Three categories, one trade curve. Titanium is much lighter at roughly identical sound reduction, which he calls ideal for hunting. Against that: titanium oxidizes on contact with air, leaving a brittle outer layer, and he reports heavy sparking and poor semi-auto longevity, with older designs failing inside a magazine of rapid fire. Newer titanium cans handle more volume, but he says his own — among the more durable examples — showed damage at about 3,000 rounds comparable to a stainless can with 30,000 on it.

J.D. Whitfield, The ReticleStainless does not spark, and he frames its life span the way shooters think about barrels: a wear item on a long clock. The round counts he offers are anecdotal. A 5.56 K-size can in poor condition at 10,000 rounds. A CAT can still fine at 6,000. A Dead Air Sandman S functionally finished past 30,000, with meaningful baffle degradation starting near 20,000. Low back pressure construction shortens that clock further, he says, and he cautions against putting stainless cans on forced-reset-trigger rifles despite full-auto ratings, which he reads as a statement about survival rather than suitability. Inconel and Haynes he treats as brand names for nickel alloys and, for buying purposes, the same thing.
A worn-out suppressor, he notes, announces itself through flash rather than sound — he describes a worn can throwing a fireball off an 11.5-inch rifle — with any sound degradation hard to detect by ear.
Suppressor mounts, HUB compatibility and size
On size, he says performance-length cans are for subsonic and hunting use chasing sound reduction above all, and that most buyers are choosing between K and standard. His advice is standard length on short-barreled setups where flash matters and K on 12.5-inch barrels and longer, with the caveat that the industry has no shared definition of either label.
On mounting, he traces HUB to a SilencerCo thread pitch that became a de facto standard, and argues its flexibility is worth the weight for buyers not yet sure what the suppressor will live on. Where one can is committed to one rifle, he calls direct thread the clear choice, citing roughly $100 and three to four ounces saved. For quick detach he prefers taper mounts and names the Rearden Atlas as reliable about staying tight. He advises against mounts built on A2 flash hiders, notes that SureFire suppressors commit the buyer to SureFire muzzle devices, and says Dead Air's system is expensive, heavy and long for what a taper mount already does.
The video closes with a walk through the host's own purchases and the problem each was bought to solve. It carries a sponsor read, and he states that one suppressor in the lineup was provided to him for review.
